Bengaluru: A 35-year-old man from Kuduregere in Bengaluru North taluk died after he allegedly set himself ablaze on Sunday, reportedly distressed over his wife’s prolonged relationship with another man. His mother, who attempted to save him, sustained severe burn injuries and is undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital.
Man distressed over alleged affair, say police
The deceased, Harish, had been married to Manjula for ten years. According to preliminary police inputs, Manjula had allegedly been in a relationship with a man named Suresh for the past three years. Officers said Harish had confronted her several times, and the situation at home had become increasingly strained.
Police sources stated that during a recent confrontation, Manjula allegedly assaulted Harish with a slipper in the presence of Suresh. The incident is believed to have caused significant emotional distress to Harish.
Unable to cope with the situation, Harish is said to have poured petrol on himself and set himself on fire near his residence. His mother, Anjinamma, rushed to rescue him but suffered major burn injuries in the attempt. She was immediately shifted to Victoria Hospital and is reported to be in critical condition.
FIR registered for abetment
Following Harish’s death, the Madanayakanahalli Police registered a case of abetment to suicide against Manjula, Suresh and another man named Sandeep, who is alleged to have supported or enabled the confrontation.
Police are currently investigating the circumstances leading to the incident, including the sequence of events on the day of the tragedy and the allegations of harassment.
Officers said statements will be recorded from family members, neighbours and others connected to the case. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
Police appeal for restraint, awareness
A senior officer urged the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to proceed. He also emphasised the importance of seeking help during situations of extreme emotional distress.
