In a tragic incident in West Bengaluru, a 41-year-old civil contractor, identified as Vinay P, ended his life by hanging himself from the window grills of a hotel room in Nagarabhavi on May 24. According to police, marital discord appears to have led him to take the drastic step.
A resident of Chandra Layout II Stage, Vinay sent a text message with his iPhone password to his younger sister around 4 am, after which he became unreachable. Alarmed, his sister, with help from relatives, tracked his location to the hotel. When there was no response at the door, Jnanabharathi police were called, who forcibly opened it to find Vinay hanging. No suicide note was found.
As per his sister’s complaint, Vinay married Sandhya (name changed) in 2017 after meeting her through a matrimonial site. They had a daughter in 2018, but soon marital issues surfaced. Sandhya allegedly isolated Vinay from his family, and the couple moved to Rajajinagar.
Vinay later discovered that Sandhya had been previously married, and he filed for divorce. Struggling emotionally, he developed alcohol dependency and was admitted to a rehabilitation center in October 2024. After his release in January, tensions escalated, especially when he resisted her desire to pursue a modelling and acting career. Sandhya allegedly began harassing their daughter.
Vinay had also built and registered a house in her name during their marriage. Following his death, police have booked Sandhya for abetment to suicide.
