Bengaluru Matrimony Portal Fined ₹60,000 for Failing to Find Bride
A consumer court in Bengaluru has ordered the Dilmil Matrimony portal to pay ₹60,000 after it failed to find a suitable match for a client’s son. The complainant, Vijaya Kumar K S from M S Nagar, sought a bride for his son Balaji through Dilmil Matrimony, based in Kalyan Nagar. On March 17, he registered with the service, providing the required documents and photos, and paid ₹30,000 as a fee. The matrimony service verbally assured him that they would find a match within 45 days.
However, despite repeated follow-ups, Dilmil Matrimony could not provide any profiles. Frustrated with the delays, Vijaya Kumar visited the office multiple times, only to face unfulfilled promises and, on one occasion, offensive treatment from the staff. When a refund request was denied, he issued a legal notice on May 9, which went unanswered.
In its October 28 order, the court stated that the complainant did not receive even a single profile to consider. Ramachandra M S, the commission’s president, ruled that the matrimony portal was liable for service deficiency and unfair trade practices. The court directed Dilmil Matrimony to refund the ₹30,000 registration fee and pay an additional ₹20,000 for deficient service, ₹5,000 for mental distress, and ₹5,000 for legal costs.
