Bengaluru could soon see the construction of a dedicated elevated corridor connecting Hebbal Junction to Kempegowda International Airport, with Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar formally requesting the Union government’s support. In a letter to Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Shivakumar cited the increasing traffic congestion on the 35-km route due to rapid industrial growth and urban expansion.
Though a current elevated road exists, it is plagued by traffic signals and pedestrian crossings, making it inefficient. The proposed signal-free flyover is aimed at reducing commute time for flyers, cargo vehicles, and daily travelers while enhancing overall connectivity to the booming airport.
Shivakumar also pushed for the six-laning of the Bengaluru–Kanakapura highway and urged swift completion of a 7-km link road near Kaggalipura. He called attention to delayed compensation for landowners affected by the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project, with several families still awaiting relief despite construction beginning in 2009.
Among the boldest proposals is a ₹30,000 crore tunnel project, stretching 60 km to connect east-west and north-south corridors through NH-7 and NH-4, to mitigate Bengaluru’s traffic chaos. Shivakumar has requested financial assistance for this from the Centre.
In discussions with Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Shivakumar also urged fast-tracking Namma Metro Phase 3 (44.65 km) and highlighted an ongoing DPR for an additional 37 km expansion.
