To combat increasing complaints about spitting and maintain hygiene, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has launched a stricter crackdown on the use of chewable tobacco products in and around its metro stations and trains.
BMRCL announced that violators found chewing or spitting tobacco will be penalised under existing rules. The new measures aim to discourage behaviors that lead to littering and unsanitary conditions on Metro premises—issues often linked to such products.
Given that chewable tobacco is not detectable by metal scanners, the Metro authority will now conduct random pat-down checks at stations. Security patrols will also be intensified, especially during non-peak hours, to monitor and deter violators. Surveillance has been upgraded, with the central control room instructed to watch for suspicious behavior and notify ground staff immediately.
Security personnel on platforms are being trained to spot and approach potential offenders. In parallel, BMRCL will soon launch an awareness campaign to educate the public about the harmful effects of tobacco and the importance of maintaining cleanliness in public spaces.
The campaign hopes to build a sense of shared responsibility among commuters, ensuring the Metro remains a clean, safe, and comfortable travel option for all.
