Bengaluru Metro is expanding its infrastructure with the addition of five new depots, complementing the existing three, to support the stabling and maintenance of trains as the network prepares for growth through 2041.
The Baiyappanahalli depot is undergoing a major remodel, becoming the first in the network to feature two levels. This depot, costing Rs 249.19 crore, will handle trains for the Outer Ring Road (Phase-2A) and Airport Lines (Phase-2B), which operate in opposite directions. The remodel includes an underground level with 21 stabling lines and an at-grade level with 20 lines. This strategic location will service 16 trains for the Outer Ring Road and 21 trains for the Airport Lines.
Among the new depots, the Shettygere depot near the airport is being built at a cost of Rs 182.33 crore and is 49% complete. It will feature ten at-grade stabling lines and future provisions for 12 elevated lines, accommodating 21 trains for Phase-2B operations. The Kothanur depot, with 20 stabling lines, and the Anjanapura depot, serving the North-South Green Line, are also progressing well with 66% and 50% of work completed, respectively. The Challaghatta depot, the most expensive at Rs 499.41 crore, will have 38 stabling lines, while the Hebbagodi depot, nearly finished at 99%, will support the R V Road-Bommasandra Line, opening in December.
The Kadugodi depot currently manages the Purple Line, and the Peenya depot handles the Green Line. Operations at Baiyappanahalli have largely moved to Kadugodi during its remodel.
