Bengaluru Metro faces chaos due to reduced services on Ambedkar Jayanti
Bengaluru Metro commuters faced a tough morning at the Majestic interchange station on Monday as train frequencies were reduced in anticipation of lower footfall due to Ambedkar Jayanti. However, the expected dip in passengers did not materialize, leading to overcrowding between 8:30 AM and 10 AM. The platforms became so packed that there was hardly any space to stand.
Despite the long weekend, which led Metro officials to believe that fewer people would travel, the number of commuters surged. Passengers expressed their frustration on social media, sharing images and videos of the chaotic scenes. Shivaprakash, a commuter, criticized the planning, saying, “Running Metro trains at a frequency of 10 minutes on Monday morning is illogical.”
Others echoed similar sentiments, with Naveen M. remarking, “BMRCL cares more about hiking fares and not about improving services.” Bengaluru Central MP, P.C. Mohan, also condemned the lack of planning, stating, “Reducing frequencies to 10 minutes during peak hours caused chaos. BMRCL needs to plan better in such cases.”
In response to the situation, BMRCL issued a statement explaining that four additional trains were deployed from Byappanahalli to Majestic to ease congestion. A total of seven fresh trips were added to the schedule to manage the crowd better.
