Bengaluru: In a Rajyotsava Day boost for city commuters, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) announced that Yellow Line trains will now operate every 15 minutes during peak hours starting November 1. The move aims to ease congestion and offer faster, more reliable connectivity for passengers travelling between RV Road and Bommasandra.
Gradual improvement since launch
The 19-kilometre Yellow Line began operations in August 2025 with only three trains running at 25-minute intervals. As additional trainsets arrived, the frequency improved to 19 minutes. With the introduction of a fifth train, BMRCL has now increased frequency to 15 minutes during peak hours, providing shorter waiting times for passengers.
10-minute frequency expected by year-end
According to BMRCL officials, the Yellow Line will operate every 10 minutes by December-end, once eight trains are in service. Full-fledged operations are expected early next year, significantly improving citywide connectivity and commuter convenience.
Busy interchange station sees heavy footfall
The RV Road Interchange Station, which connects the Green and Yellow Lines, has become one of the busiest in the network, witnessing an average weekday footfall of 45,000 passengers. The interchange plays a vital role in facilitating seamless travel between key corridors across the city.
Rising ridership on Yellow Line
Ridership on the Yellow Line has steadily increased, nearing one lakh daily boardings. The corridor links major residential areas with Bengaluru’s IT and industrial zones, making it one of the city’s most important transport routes.
Addressing maintenance challenges
A senior BMRCL official said that running all trains continuously had caused maintenance issues. “From November 1, we will operate five trains during peak hours and four during non-peak hours. Withdrawing one train during off-peak hours helps ensure better maintenance and service reliability,” the official explained.
Sixth train under testing
The sixth trainset, built by Titagarh Rail Systems, is undergoing testing and is expected to be dispatched to Bengaluru by mid-November. Once operational, it will further reduce train intervals and enhance commuter comfort.
No change in first and last train timings
Despite increased frequency, the first and last train timings from both terminals remain unchanged. The adjustments apply only to the time interval between trains, not their start or end schedules.
Delays in train production resolved
The delay in bogie supply from China earlier this year affected train production, but BMRCL now expects all pending trainsets to be delivered before the year ends.
Commuter experience set to improve
The addition of the fifth train has enabled the latest frequency upgrade, while upcoming additions will make the Yellow Line one of the most efficient routes in Bengaluru. The change is expected to make daily travel smoother and faster for thousands of metro users.
