Bengaluru NGOs Urge Public to Help Animals Beat the Heat Amid Surge in Distress Calls
As Bengaluru’s summer heat intensifies, animal welfare organizations are witnessing a rise in distress calls related to heat-stricken birds and stray animals. The city’s animal rescue centers are receiving alarming numbers of calls daily for dehydrated birds like kites, crows, and even community animals such as cats.
PFA (People for Animals) Wildlife Hospital reports receiving 15-20 daily rescue calls, primarily for black kites collapsing mid-flight due to the heat. CUPA (Compassion Unlimited Plus Action) has noticed a higher impact on birds due to diminishing green cover. Ajay Arjun from CUPA stated that the heat is already taking a toll on the birds, even before peak summer hits.
Other organizations, like Praana Animal Foundation and Charlie’s Animal Rescue Centre (CARE), are also responding to numerous calls related to animals showing signs of exhaustion. Sudha Narayanan, founder of CARE, highlighted that recovery from heat exhaustion often takes 4-5 days, requiring fluid therapy and ice packs.
To help combat the growing issue, initiatives like Water for Voiceless are distributing free water bowls for animals across Bengaluru. Since February, around 2,500 bowls have been distributed. PFA is also sending 6,000-litre water tankers to refill dry water points in forests.
Locals are doing their part as well, placing water bowls on terraces and balconies to provide relief to birds and animals. These efforts are crucial in helping animals stay hydrated during this extreme heat.
