Tobacco Control Drive:
In preparation for World No Tobacco Day on May 31, Bengaluru Police Chief B Dayananda warned strict penalties against outlets vending tobacco products without the required BBMP license. From May 27 to June 2, enforcement of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) will intensify citywide, targeting illegal sales, public smoking, sale to minors, and tobacco shops near schools. Authorities will also clamp down on e-cigarettes, vaping devices, and unauthorized hookah bars through surprise inspections at malls and cafes.

Corruption Probe:
The Lokayukta Special Court reprimanded police for failing to apprehend principal suspects in a graft case involving a police inspector coercing a contractor to sell property under duress. The court denied anticipatory bail to four accused, highlighting non-cooperation with investigators.

Garbage Tax Controversy:
Opposition BJP leader R Ashoka demanded the repeal of the Rs 250 garbage user fee imposed by the Congress administration, terming it an excessive burden on residents. He warned the levy would inflate rents and service costs, accusing the ruling party of exploiting citizens to finance populist schemes.

Urban Greening Efforts:
BBMP commenced planting 100,000 indigenous saplings across parks and lake buffer zones like Arekere and Varthur. The initiative, aligned with early monsoon rains, aims to enhance tree survival and improve Bengaluru’s ecological balance.

Student Protest:
More than 100 BEd aspirants protested against Sri Vishnu Vocational Studies for fraud and withholding academic documents. The institute falsely claimed Bangalore University affiliation, leading to missed exams and police complaints.
