BENGALURU: A viral X post has reignited the “outsider-insider” debate in Bengaluru, sparking strong reactions from across the tech capital. The post by user Manju claimed that Bengaluru belongs exclusively to Kannadigas, and that non-Kannada speakers should expect to be treated as outsiders if they don’t make an effort to speak the local language.
The provocative statement has drawn criticism and support from various quarters. Techie Shristy Sharma countered the post, asserting that while respecting local culture is important, claiming superiority based on language is unacceptable. Another user, Shiva, emphasized Bengaluru’s tradition of inclusivity and diversity, urging people to celebrate this rather than create barriers.
Some responses suggested that learning Kannada could ease interactions in the city. A former resident recounted that using a pocket dictionary and making an effort to speak Kannada helped them navigate life in Bengaluru.
Fitness coach Priyanka Lahri shared her own experience, highlighting that despite struggling with Kannada, she has always been treated well and found Bengaluru to be welcoming.
The debate reflects ongoing discussions about language, identity, and inclusivity in Bengaluru, a city known for its diverse population and vibrant tech industry.
