In a major attempt to address long-standing parking problems, the Greater Bengaluru Authority is preparing to roll out a citywide pay-and-park system across multiple zones of the city.

The move aims to reduce roadside parking chaos, improve pedestrian movement and bring discipline to congested streets where vehicles are often parked haphazardly.

Smart parking plans revived

Bengaluru had earlier introduced a smart parking model in 2020 through the then Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike in central areas such as MG Road and St Mark’s Road.

That system later became inactive, but authorities are now reviving the concept with upgraded technology.

AI and QR code system in Jayanagar

A pilot project has already begun on 27th Main Road in Jayanagar under the South Corporation.

Officials said users will scan QR codes, view empty parking slots through an app and make digital payments. AI-enabled cameras will monitor occupancy and violations, with no cash collection involved.

Expansion across city zones

North Corporation is planning a parking project on a 4.1-kilometre stretch in Yelahanka, while East Corporation is considering six roads for similar facilities.

Authorities have also identified 66 locations for future multi-level parking systems across Bengaluru.

Public divided over fees

While some residents welcomed the move as a solution to illegal parking and traffic bottlenecks, others said parking charges should remain affordable until public transport improves further.

Many commuters cited weak last-mile connectivity, making private vehicles necessary despite metro and bus services.

Experts back balanced approach

Urban planners say paid parking can discourage excessive private vehicle use and push demand for stronger public transport.

However, residents insist the policy must be fair, transparent and efficiently enforced.
