In a concerted effort to curb sandalwood smuggling, Bengaluru police have arrested two individuals in separate cases, seizing 146 kg of sandalwood valued at ₹14.6 lakh.

Case 1: Sandalwood Smuggling in Subramanyapura

Acting on a tip-off, the Subramanyapura police intercepted a truck near Uttarahalli on November 5. Inside, they found 300 pieces of sandalwood weighing 146 kg. The suspect, Sharath (26), a resident of Piriyapatna in Mysuru district, was arrested while delivering the contraband.

Further investigation revealed that Yogesh, the prime accused, loaded the sandalwood in Siddapura, Kodagu, and dispatched it to Bengaluru for delivery to another suspect, Chetan. Authorities are actively searching for Yogesh and Chetan, with investigators stating, “Details of the two suspects have been collected, and a manhunt is underway.”

Case 2: Attempted Theft on Jnanabharathi Campus

In another incident, the Jnanabharathi police arrested Sakayya alias Saka (28) from Ramanagara for attempting to steal sandalwood trees from the Jnanabharathi campus. The theft attempt, reported on November 14 by campus security, was thwarted when the gang fled the scene.

Crucially, a mobile phone left behind at the location led authorities to Saka, who was apprehended on December 4 near Iruligaradoddi, Ramanagara. He is now in judicial custody, while police continue searching for his accomplices.

Technological Upgrades: QR Codes for Seizure Documentation

To enhance transparency and efficiency in handling seizure records, Bengaluru police have introduced QR code technology. Each seizure is documented on an internal server, with a QR code generated for quick access and tracking.

These arrests and technological advancements underline the city’s commitment to combating illegal activities and modernizing law enforcement practices.
