In a significant move to safeguard students, the Bengaluru traffic police have launched an extensive special operation targeting school vehicle drivers under the influence of alcohol. Since the beginning of the year, this operation has led to the booking of 72 drivers for violating traffic laws. This initiative underscores the traffic department’s commitment to ensuring the safety of students who rely on school transport.

Since January, a total of 12,165 vehicles have been inspected as part of this operation. The traffic police have carried out these inspections on several dates throughout the year, focusing on different aspects of traffic safety. Notable operations took place on January 23, February 22, July 9, and August 4, with each date reflecting a concerted effort to address the issue of drunken driving among school vehicle drivers.

On January 23, a comprehensive check of 3,414 vehicles resulted in 16 drivers being booked for driving under the influence. The February 22 operation involved inspecting 2,059 vehicles, leading to the booking of 7 drivers. The July 9 inspection covered 3,016 school vehicles, with 23 drivers found to be under the influence. The most recent operation on August 4 involved 3,676 vehicle checks, resulting in 26 cases being registered.

The traffic police have emphasized that student safety remains their top priority. This special operation is part of a broader strategy to maintain high standards of safety in school transportation and to deter any instances of drunken driving. The department has committed to continuing this operation indefinitely, with strict penalties for those found violating traffic rules.

In addition to the enforcement actions, the traffic police have reached out to school and college management boards as well as parents. They have urged these groups to play an active role in ensuring that drivers adhere to traffic rules. The public is also encouraged to report any violations related to safety rules to further enhance the effectiveness of this initiative.

The traffic department has highlighted the importance of public cooperation in maintaining safety on the roads. By reporting violations and ensuring that drivers follow traffic regulations, the community can contribute to a safer environment for students. The Bengaluru traffic police believe that collective efforts from all stakeholders, including educational institutions, parents, and the general public, are crucial in achieving the desired outcomes of this operation.
