Severe pre-monsoon rains that lashed Bengaluru have caused widespread disruption, uprooting over 170 trees and triggering major traffic and power issues across the city.
Trees uprooted, roads blocked
Civic authorities reported that at least 170 trees were uprooted and hundreds of branches snapped due to strong winds accompanying the storm. Several roads were blocked, leading to traffic congestion in key areas.
Low-lying regions witnessed waterlogging, further slowing movement and affecting daily commuters.
Power outages in multiple areas
The heavy downpour also disrupted electricity supply in several localities. Fallen trees and branches damaged power lines, leaving residents without electricity for hours.
Officials said restoration work was taken up on priority, though intermittent outages continued in some parts.
Storm brings city to standstill
The rains, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, brought Bengaluru to a near standstill. Commuters faced long delays, while emergency services received numerous distress calls related to flooding and fallen trees.
The India Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert ahead of the storm, warning of intense rainfall and strong winds.
Damage and safety concerns
Apart from infrastructure damage, the rains also raised safety concerns, with multiple rain-related incidents reported across the city, including wall collapses and electrocutions.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious, especially in waterlogged areas and near electric poles.
More rain expected
Weather officials have forecast continued thundershowers and gusty winds over the next couple of days, prompting civic agencies to stay on high alert.
The incident highlights Bengaluru’s recurring challenges with urban flooding and infrastructure resilience during extreme weather events.
