According to the TomTom Traffic Index 2023, Bengaluru has been ranked as one of the worst cities in Asia for traffic. Commuters in the city spend an average of 28 minutes and 10 seconds to travel just 10 kilometers, translating to approximately 132 additional hours annually stuck in traffic during rush hours.
The report underscores the severe congestion in the city, driven by its rapidly growing population and urban infrastructure. Despite initiatives aimed at improving traffic flow, Bengaluru’s roads remain some of the slowest in Asia.
Pune follows closely in second place, with travel times averaging 27 minutes and 50 seconds per 10 km, while Manila (Philippines) and Taichung (Taiwan) record 27 minutes and 20 seconds, and 26 minutes and 50 seconds respectively.
The TomTom Traffic Index, which analyzed 387 cities across 55 countries, provides insights into average travel times, fuel costs, and CO2 emissions. It serves as a resource for drivers, pedestrians, city planners, and policymakers to address traffic challenges.
On a global scale, London holds the title for the slowest city center, with drivers taking 37 minutes and 20 seconds to cover 10 kilometers in 2023.
