Bengaluru: The city witnessed an unprecedented weather event as it recorded 111.5 mm of rainfall in a single day, the highest ever for April in over a century, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The record-breaking downpour on Wednesday evening surpassed the previous high of 108.6 mm recorded on April 19, 2001, marking a significant meteorological milestone for Bengaluru.
Intense rain shatters long-standing record
The torrential rainfall, which occurred within just a couple of hours, is being described as one of the most intense weather events in recent memory.
Meteorological data shows that the 111.5 mm rainfall is nearly three times the city’s long-term monthly average of 41 mm for April in Bengaluru Urban district. The sudden surge followed a prolonged dry spell, during which the city received only trace rainfall between April 1 and April 28.
Experts say such extreme weather patterns highlight increasing variability in pre-monsoon conditions.
Widespread damage across the city
The heavy downpour caused extensive damage to life and property, particularly in the Central Business District and other low-lying areas.
Several areas witnessed severe flooding, fallen trees, and damaged vehicles. Roads were inundated, disrupting traffic and daily life.
The impact turned tragic as multiple rain-related deaths were reported. Seven people lost their lives in a compound wall collapse near Bowring Hospital, while three additional fatalities occurred in separate incidents linked to the storm.
IMD forecasts more rain
The IMD has predicted that light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers, accompanied by gusty winds, are likely to continue in isolated parts of Bengaluru over the next couple of days.
Rainfall activity is expected to persist until Friday, after which dry conditions are likely to return.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious, especially in areas prone to waterlogging and falling debris.
Limited impact on daytime temperatures
Despite the heavy rainfall, the IMD noted that the downpour is unlikely to significantly reduce daytime temperatures in the city.
Maximum temperatures in Bengaluru are expected to hover around 36°C, which is about 2°C above normal levels for this time of the year.
This indicates that while evenings may bring temporary relief, daytime heat conditions are likely to persist.
Climate variability in focus
The record-breaking rainfall has once again drawn attention to changing weather patterns in urban centres like Bengaluru.
Frequent instances of intense, short-duration rainfall combined with strong winds are becoming more common, posing challenges for infrastructure and disaster preparedness.
Experts stress the need for improved drainage systems, better urban planning, and real-time weather monitoring to mitigate the impact of such extreme events.
Conclusion
Bengaluru’s highest-ever April rainfall in a single day marks a significant weather event with both immediate and long-term implications. While it brought temporary relief from heat, the widespread damage and loss of life underline the urgent need for preparedness and resilience against increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.
