To ease Bengaluru’s severe congestion, authorities are relocating 52 poorly placed bus stops that obstruct traffic flow. A 2024 survey by BBMP, BMTC, and Traffic Police pinpointed key trouble spots, including Silk Board Junction (towards Banashankari) and ITPL (towards KR Puram), where bus stops are being shifted slightly to enhance road capacity and pedestrian movement.

This effort is part of broader measures to improve traffic conditions. Authorities have resumed vehicle towing in 22 high-traffic corridors and 75 key junctions, especially in the Central Business District, to tackle illegal parking. Some traffic signals have also been repositioned for better efficiency, though synchronization remains a work in progress.

Upgrading bus shelters

BBMP is set to renovate 60 bus stops with improved amenities, addressing long-standing complaints of poor infrastructure. New bus bays with thermoplastic markings will be introduced for smoother traffic flow.

Problem with junction bus stops

The BMTC guidelines prohibit placing bus stops at intersections, where pedestrian and vehicular traffic is already high. According to traffic expert Prof. MN Shreehari, Indian Roads Congress (IRC) norms recommend positioning bus stops 100–120 meters from junctions to prevent bottlenecks. With over 1,500 junctions in the city, many existing stops contribute to gridlocks. He urged a technical survey to determine ideal locations while ensuring passenger convenience.
