Bengaluru Resident Foils Scam by Recording Fake Flipkart Delivery Agent
A Bengaluru resident narrowly escaped a scam involving a fake Flipkart delivery agent attempting to deliver a fraudulent package. The scam, which involved a sealed box purportedly containing an iPhone 15, was foiled by the recipient’s quick thinking and vigilance.
The incident unfolded when the resident’s sister, who had ordered the phone and opted for Flipkart’s open-box delivery feature, received a visit from a delivery agent claiming to have the package. However, when the agent refused to allow the package to be opened before acceptance—contrary to Flipkart’s policy—suspicions were raised.
Sensing something was amiss, the resident began filming the interaction, capturing the delivery agent’s refusal to open the box and reluctance to provide further details. The footage also recorded the agent discussing the situation with accomplices in Kannada, showing clear discomfort about the resident recording the encounter. Shortly after the fake agent left, the official Flipkart delivery executive arrived with the correct package, allowing for the open-box inspection.
In a Reddit post, the resident described how the scam was averted thanks to his decision to document the interaction, stressing that the recording likely discouraged the fraudulent agent from completing the scam.
The post quickly gained traction, with many users commenting on similar experiences of distrust with online deliveries. Some users praised the resident for his presence of mind, advising others to follow a similar approach when something seems suspicious.
One user remarked, “Glad you knew something was off and recorded everything. It’s disturbing that Flipkart can’t do more to prevent these scams.”
Another shared advice, saying, “As soon as something suspicious happens, start recording. This instinct is necessary in a city like Bengaluru.”
This incident serves as a reminder for consumers to be vigilant when accepting deliveries, especially high-value items. Verifying delivery details, opting for open-box delivery, and inspecting packages before acceptance are critical steps in preventing scams.
