Bengaluru: Two individuals have reported to the police that they collectively lost around ₹95 lakh due to cyber fraudsters who lured them with counterfeit videos purportedly featuring prominent businessmen. The victims failed to verify the legitimacy of these videos, leading them to click on suspicious links that directed them to fraudulent websites designed to deceive users and promise high returns on investments.
According to a senior police official, the complainants discovered only after investing that the videos featuring Infosys co-founder N. R. Narayana Murthy and Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani were used to mislead them. They had fallen victim to the scams due to their lack of due diligence.
In one incident, a resident of Banashankari encountered a video promoting a trading platform that guaranteed substantial returns. After clicking a link from a questionable website, she provided her personal information to the fraudulent platform. Subsequently, she received a call from an unidentified individual claiming to be an agent. Initially investing ₹1.4 lakh, she earned ₹8,000 in returns, but after investing an additional ₹6.7 lakh, she received nothing in return and lost her entire investment. She also reported losing ₹67 lakh to another fraudulent platform.
In a separate case, a retired employee fell prey to a similar scam after watching a video on social media, resulting in a loss of ₹19 lakh transferred to two different accounts associated with the fraudsters. The police have registered two cases at the CEN South police station and are investigating to identify those responsible for the scam.
