Harapanahalli mishap leaves one child dead, sibling injured

Bengaluru Rural: A tragic road accident near Harapanahalli in Jigani claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy on Friday night. The victim, identified as M Rehan, was riding a gearless scooter when it rear-ended a car. His younger brother, M Ayan, aged 10, who was riding pillion, escaped with injuries and is undergoing treatment in hospital.

According to police, the boys were returning home after offering prayers at a mosque on the occasion of Eid-e-Milad when the mishap occurred. Their father, Manoj Ravat, works as a carpenter in Bihar, while their mother, Sultana, is employed as a housekeeping staffer in Dubai. The scooter involved in the accident is registered in the name of their grandmother, P Mumtaz.

Police account of the accident

“Rehan, who was riding at maximum speed, rammed a car from the rear. Since he had no helmet, Rehan sustained serious head injuries and died instantly,” an investigating officer said.

The police have registered a case against Mumtaz, the registered owner of the vehicle, for allowing a minor to ride a two-wheeler, which is a violation of traffic norms.

Family and community in shock

The death has left the family and neighbourhood in grief. Residents of the area, who were preparing to celebrate Eid-e-Milad, were shaken by the news of the young boy’s death. Locals noted that cases of underage riding have been reported frequently in the region, despite repeated warnings from authorities.

Another fatal crash in Bannerghatta

In a separate incident on the same night, a 53-year-old businessman from Sarjapur, identified as K Ventakappa, died after his motorbike skidded off the road near Kulumenahalli in Bannerghatta. Ventakappa sustained multiple injuries and succumbed at the spot.

Road safety concerns

Both incidents highlight the rising concerns over road safety in Bengaluru and surrounding areas. Officials stress that allowing minors to ride two-wheelers poses significant dangers not only to them but also to other motorists. Authorities are likely to intensify enforcement in the wake of these back-to-back fatal accidents.

Conclusion

The tragic death of 13-year-old Rehan serves as a grim reminder of the perils of underage riding. With enforcement and parental responsibility seen as key, authorities hope that stricter action will help prevent such accidents in the future.
