Bengaluru recorded 768 pedestrian deaths over the past three years, highlighting persistent road safety issues despite a 19% drop in fatalities in 2024 compared to 2023. The Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) reported a decline in pedestrian deaths from 287 in 2023 to 233 in 2024, crediting improved safety measures, blackspot corrections, and stricter enforcement.

Road Crash Overview

In 2024, the city saw 4,784 road crashes, slightly fewer than the 4,974 crashes in 2023. These included 871 fatal incidents leading to 893 deaths and 4,052 injuries. Self-caused crashes, often resulting from reckless driving, claimed 212 lives, a marginal increase from 209 in 2023.

Enforcement Efforts

Stricter actions against violations contributed to improved safety. In 2024, 82.86 lakh traffic offences were registered, with 78.07 lakh detected through contactless methods like ITMS cameras, social media, and the Public Eye platform. Drunk driving cases dropped by 10.6%, with 23,574 violators caught out of 12.54 lakh vehicles checked. Fines collected amounted to ₹80.9 crore.

Enforcement targeted illegal parking, footpath encroachments, and road rage. 201 school bus drivers, 83 private bus drivers, and 67 water tanker drivers were caught driving under the influence.
