Bengaluru sees fresh COVID scare as elderly man dies after testing positive
An 84-year-old man from Bengaluru, who had multiple existing health problems, passed away after contracting COVID-19. This is Karnataka’s second reported virus-linked death in 2025. The man had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Whitefield since May 13 due to diabetes-related issues. He succumbed on May 17. His COVID test, taken at the time of admission, returned positive a day after his death, on May 18.
Simultaneously, in Maharashtra’s Thane district, a similar fatality was confirmed on Friday. Local officials there also reported a young man with diabetic ketoacidosis who tested positive before passing away. Although his death was attributed to his underlying illness, it raised concerns about the virus spreading again.
Karnataka health officials have identified 38 active COVID cases statewide, with 32 detected in Bengaluru alone. Though the figures are still low, the gradual increase has prompted authorities to step up vigilance. Testing has been intensified, especially among patients with respiratory or cardiac issues.
Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has urged the public to stay calm, stating that no travel limits or movement curbs are necessary at this stage. He assured that the government is prepared to act swiftly if the situation escalates.
Citizens, particularly the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, are being advised to wear masks in crowded areas, maintain personal hygiene, and seek prompt care if symptoms appear.
