A 20-year-old dental student in Bengaluru, Soumya, tragically died by suicide on Saturday afternoon, allegedly due to academic pressure and a lack of interest in her studies. Soumya, a student at KLE Dental College in Yeshwanthpur, took the drastic step around 12.45 pm on April 13, jumping from the fourth floor of Victory Harmony Apartment in RT Nagar, where she lived. She succumbed to her injuries immediately.
Police investigations suggest that Soumya had been struggling with her studies, particularly during exam periods, and had experienced bouts of depression. Authorities believe that the ongoing stress may have led to this tragic decision. A case has been filed under an Unnatural Death Report, as per Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The police have launched further inquiries into the incident, with more details expected to emerge as the investigation continues.
This tragedy comes in the wake of another suicide incident in Bengaluru earlier this year. In February 2025, a 15-year-old student, Avantika Chaurasia, took her life after an argument with her mother over mobile phone usage during study leave. She jumped from the 20th floor of her apartment, sustaining fatal injuries. Family and neighbors rushed to assist, but she was declared dead at the scene
