BENGALURU: A 25-year-old software engineer died and another person was injured after a BMW RR sports bike allegedly travelling at high speed crashed into a Swift Dzire near Chikkasanne Gate on NH-44 late Saturday night. The accident took place as a group of friends was returning from a dinner outing near Devanahalli.

The deceased was identified as Naveen Gowda N, a resident of Neraganahalli village in Devanahalli taluk. His 26-year-old friend Avinash, who was travelling in the same car, suffered injuries and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

The BMW rider, identified as Rakesh Chaudhary, was also injured in the crash. Police have registered a case against him for alleged overspeeding and negligent riding resulting in death.

BMW bike crashes into car near Chikkasanne

According to the complaint filed by Ashok, 29, the group had gone to a dhaba near Devanahalli for dinner before beginning their return journey. The Swift Dzire was being driven by their friend Manas Gowda, who had borrowed the vehicle from another friend.

At around 11.50 pm, when the car was taking a turn towards Chikkasanne village, the BMW RR sports bike allegedly approached at high speed and crashed into the front-left door of the car.

The impact was severe and left the car badly damaged. Naveen, who was seated beside the driver, suffered serious injuries to his head and body. Avinash, who was sitting in the rear seat, suffered an injury near his left eye.

The BMW rider was thrown onto the road along with the motorcycle. The bike was also heavily damaged in the collision.

Software engineer declared dead at hospital

Following the crash, Naveen and Avinash were taken to a private hospital in Devanahalli at around 12.30 am.

Doctors declared Naveen dead after he was brought to the hospital. Avinash was subsequently shifted to another hospital near Kodigehalli Junction for further treatment.

The BMW rider, Rakesh Chaudhary, was also taken for medical treatment after the accident. Police later said he had been discharged from the hospital and was not available for questioning.

Police have seized both the BMW motorcycle and the Swift Dzire as part of the investigation.

Police investigate overspeeding and possible alcohol use

A senior police officer said investigators had reached the accident spot soon after receiving information about the crash. The injured persons had already been taken to hospital by then.

Police said they had not yet received the medical examination report of the BMW rider. Investigators are also expected to determine whether alcohol consumption played any role in the accident.

The officer said that once Chaudhary is apprehended and questioned, police will be able to establish further details about the circumstances leading to the crash.

A case has been registered at the Devanahalli traffic police station against the BMW rider for overspeeding and negligent riding that allegedly resulted in a death.

Accident highlights concerns over highway safety

The fatal collision once again highlights the risks associated with high-speed riding on major highways around Bengaluru. NH-44 is an important route connecting Bengaluru with Devanahalli and the airport region, and the stretch also carries substantial traffic, particularly during late-evening and night hours.

While the exact speed of the motorcycle and other factors leading to the collision will have to be established through the police investigation, the preliminary case registered by the traffic police focuses on alleged overspeeding and negligent riding.

Investigators are expected to examine the damaged vehicles, statements from those involved and other available evidence to establish how the BMW motorcycle collided with the car.

The death of Naveen has also left his family and friends dealing with the consequences of a road accident that occurred during what had begun as a routine dinner outing.

Investigation underway

Police have seized the vehicles involved in the accident and are continuing their investigation. The BMW rider’s medical records, witness accounts and other evidence are expected to help investigators reconstruct the sequence of events.

The authorities have not yet indicated whether any other person will be booked in connection with the accident. Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation and the medical and forensic reports.

The incident serves as another reminder for motorists and bikers to exercise caution, particularly while travelling at night and negotiating turns on busy highway stretches.
