Bengaluru: Karnataka’s rail connectivity is set to reach new heights with the launch of its first Vande Bharat Sleeper train next month, connecting Bengaluru to Belagavi. Union Minister V. Somanna announced the initiative, marking a significant step towards enhancing the state’s transportation infrastructure.

A Game-Changer in Rail Travel

The sleeper Vande Bharat train aims to provide faster and more comfortable travel between Karnataka’s capital and the northern district of Belagavi. During a press conference, Somanna also shared updates on the region’s rail development, including the much-anticipated Belagavi-Dharwad railway line via Kittur—a project inspired by the late Suresh Angadi, a former minister and regional development advocate.

Key Details:

  • Fares (Approximate):
    • AC 3 Tier: ₹3,200–3,400
    • AC 2 Tier: ₹4,400–4,500
    • First Class AC: ₹5,400–5,500
  • Route Benefits: The 73-kilometre Belagavi-Dharwad railway line will reduce travel time by over an hour and significantly improve regional connectivity.

Progress Updates

The Belagavi-Dharwad railway line is moving closer to realization. Land acquisition is critical for the project, requiring 888 acres (600 in Belagavi and 228 in Dharwad).

  • Land Status:
    • Belagavi: 444 acres will be handed over next month, with full submissions expected by late January 2025.
    • Dharwad: Most land acquisition is complete, except for a challenging 42-acre section that the government is actively addressing.

In addition, infrastructure enhancements in Belagavi include the construction of five Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and one Road Under Bridge (RUB) to improve safety and streamline traffic.

Looking Ahead

The state already benefits from the Pune-Belagavi Vande Bharat train, but this new sleeper service between Bengaluru and Belagavi is a first. It is poised to transform intercity travel, offering comfort and efficiency.

The government’s investment in rail infrastructure, combined with plans for modern amenities and reduced travel times, reflects a bold vision for Karnataka’s transportation future.
