Bengaluru’s notorious traffic jams may soon be alleviated with the introduction of electric flying taxis, thanks to a new collaboration between Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) and Sarla Aviation. This initiative aims to develop advanced air mobility solutions using seven-seater electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, significantly reducing travel times between Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) and key locations in the city, such as Electronics City.
The innovative flying taxis promise to be faster, quieter, and more eco-friendly than traditional helicopters, marking a significant shift in urban transportation. For example, a journey from Indiranagar to the airport, which currently takes up to 1.5 hours, could potentially be reduced to just 5 minutes. Sarla Aviation’s CEO, Adrian Schmidt, described the project as a game-changer, likening it to the affordability and convenience of ride-sharing apps like Uber.
While the project is in its early stages, with prototypes yet to be developed and regulatory approvals expected to take years, the potential impact is substantial. BIAL insiders anticipate that it may take at least two to three years before the service is launched. With Sarla Aviation leading the charge, Bengaluru could soon become a pioneer in futuristic air mobility solutions, helping to alleviate its severe traffic congestion.
