India is on the verge of a significant milestone with the impending launch of its first second-life battery-powered solar electric vehicle (EV) charging station, located approximately 1.5 km from Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. According to a reliable source from the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom), the facility is scheduled to commence operations by the end of October.

A Collaborative Effort

The innovative project is the result of a public-private partnership between Bescom and GIZ, a German-based firm specialising in international cooperation for sustainable development. This collaboration aims to accommodate over 1,000 EVs daily, including 175 electric taxis that have recently been introduced at Kempegowda International Airport.

What Are Second-Life Batteries?

Second-life batteries refer to those that have completed their primary five-year life cycle yet remain functional for an additional five years. This project leverages these batteries to avoid disposal and reduce costs, thereby promoting sustainability within the electric vehicle sector. The initiative aligns with broader environmental goals by ensuring that used batteries are repurposed rather than discarded.

Facility Overview

The charging station spans an area of 70 metres and comprises 23 compartments, each measuring 7 metres in length and 2.5 metres in width. It has the capacity to charge 23 vehicles simultaneously, ensuring efficient service for the expected volume of users.

As per the details accessed from official documents, the station will operate around the clock, providing both AC and DC charging options. The pricing is set at ₹7.5 per unit for AC charging and ₹6.7 for DC charging, making it an economically viable option for EV users. The EV Mitra application will facilitate access to charging points, enhancing user convenience.

Energy Generation and Sustainability

The charging station has been constructed at an estimated cost of ₹4 crore and boasts a capacity of 400 kV power. Notably, 45 kV of this capacity will be generated through a solar installation situated above the station. The remaining power will be sourced from the grid of the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) located near the facility.

In a progressive step toward sustainable energy use, the charging station is equipped with a metering system to monitor the electricity generated from the solar setup. Any excess solar electricity will be transferred to the grid, ensuring that no energy is wasted.

Karnataka’s EV Leadership

Karnataka is already recognised as a leader in electric vehicle infrastructure, with over 5,700 EV charging outlets across the state. This upcoming facility will further solidify Karnataka’s position as a pioneer in launching second-life battery-powered solar EV charging stations, contributing to the state’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.

Inauguration and Future Prospect

When queried about the inauguration of the charging station, the Bescom source mentioned that GIZ is currently conducting testing on the batteries, expected to be completed within the week. Preliminary tests have been successful, and once the battery assessments are finalised, the station will be officially inaugurated and commence operations.
