Bengaluru will see back-to-back liquor bans next week, with “dry days” declared on Thursday, August 15, for Independence Day, and Friday, August 16, for Krishna Janmashtami. On both days, liquor sales and service will be prohibited for 24 hours citywide.
Authorities say the move is intended to maintain peace during national and religious celebrations, where large gatherings are expected. All establishments — including bars, pubs, clubs, restaurants, and retail liquor outlets — must comply without exception.
Independence Day is a mandatory dry day nationwide, while Janmashtami is traditionally observed as a dry day in Karnataka, though not uniformly enforced in other states. An official notification for August 16 is awaited, but past practice suggests the ban is almost certain.
Another restriction may follow later in the month. Ganesh Chaturthi on August 27, which marks the start of the ten-day festival honouring Lord Ganesha, is also on the state’s dry day list. While only the first day is officially recognised, officials may introduce additional bans during the festival’s conclusion on September 6 (Anantha Chaturdashi), when large idol immersion processions take place. Such measures, if announced, would be aimed at easing crowd control and ensuring public safety.
For now, residents are advised to plan their purchases in advance and be mindful of the restrictions to avoid penalties.
