Bengaluru: In a deeply disturbing incident, an 81-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her own son at their home in Bagalagunte late Thursday night. The victim, identified as R Shanta Bai, was reportedly killed during a heated argument over money.
Police have arrested her son, 56-year-old Mahendra Singh, who is said to be an alcoholic and unemployed. Investigations revealed that Mahendra had lost his job due to his drinking habits, leading to estrangement from his wife. He had been living with his mother since.
According to family members, Mahendra frequently quarreled with Shanta Bai for money to buy alcohol. On Thursday night, an argument escalated, and he allegedly struck her on the head with an iron rod.
The horrific act came to light when neighbours, alarmed by the noise, rushed in and discovered Shanta Bai’s lifeless body. They immediately informed the police, who arrived and arrested Mahendra at the scene.
Shanta Bai’s husband, Ram Singh, had passed away years earlier, and she had been supporting herself with her meagre savings.
Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation.
