A Bengaluru-based family returning from the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj met with a devastating accident near Yelakeli village, about 10 km from Wardha, on the Samruddhi Expressway early Sunday morning.

Two women, Ramyashree Naresh Naidu (32) and Shakuntala Ramakrishnayya (45), lost their lives on the spot, while three others, including six-year-old Poorvik Naresh Naidu, sustained critical injuries. The injured, including Najayya Kolur Shivahrudaya (35), have been admitted to Acharya Vinoba Bhave Rural Hospital in Sawangi.

The family had initially planned to return home after their religious visit to Prayagraj but decided to visit Sai Baba’s temple in Shirdi, taking the Samruddhi Expressway for their journey.

The accident occurred when their vehicle attempted to overtake a truck that was traveling in the wrong lane—reserved for light vehicles instead of heavy ones. The car lost control, overturned at high speed, and was severely damaged.

Authorities have verified the victims’ identities, and the Sawangi police have launched an investigation into the incident.
