Bengaluru: Bengaluru has launched South India’s inaugural underground air-conditioned market, the ‘Palike Bazaar’, inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiahand Vijayanagar MLA M Krishnappa. The Rs 13-crore project is situated adjacent to the Vijayanagar metro station and bus stand.
Design and Features
The Palike Bazaar, named after the 16th-century Vijayanagar emperor Krishnadevaraya, covers an area of 1,365 square metres, stretching 136 metres in length and 11 metres in width. It houses 79 shops, each with a space of approximately nine square metres. The market, inspired by New Delhi’s Palika Bazaar, features central air-conditioning throughout, with 31 shops having additional individual units.
The development was undertaken by Parichita Constructions, a private firm. Initial funding of Rs 5 crore was allocated by the BBMP in 2017-18, followed by an additional Rs 8 crore in 2021-22. The project was completed in phases, with the first 40 shops ready by 2022. However, the opening was delayed until the completion of the second phase, which involved modifications to the market’s entrances.
Amenities and Impact
The market boasts eight entrances, 145 lights, two escalators, and a lift, along with essential fire extinguishers and a power transformer. This facility is expected to alleviate congestion on the streets above, known for street shopping.
MLA Krishnappa noted that the idea for the air-conditioned market came from his visit to Delhi’s Palika Bazaar. He highlighted the market’s role in addressing issues faced by vegetable vendors who previously set up temporary stalls on Chord Road, which led to complaints from local traders and pedestrians.
Krishnappa also mentioned ongoing projects funded by the BBMP, including upgrades to Kanaka Bhavan, a sports complex at JP Park, a new Ranga Mandira, Ambedkar Bhavan, and Kempegowda Commercial Complex. Future plans include the construction of Valmiki Bhavan and Kempegowda Bhavan.
Government Support and Future Plans
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah praised Krishnappa for his role in the project and suggested that similar underground markets could be developed in other parts of Bengaluru to ease road congestion. The Palike Bazaar’s proximity to a metro station and bus stand is expected to benefit the general public, enhancing accessibility and convenience.
