Bengaluru: Bengaluru is likely to experience cloudy skies and thundershowers as the northeast monsoon brings fresh rainfall activity to southern India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast spells of rain and thunderstorms across Karnataka, with the seasonal shift expected to influence weather conditions over the coming days.

The northeast monsoon began over southern peninsular India on October 15, 2026, following the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon. The change is expected to bring renewed rainfall to several southern states, including Karnataka.

Cloudy Skies and Thundershowers Expected

Bengaluru is expected to experience generally cloudy skies, with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also possible.

The city’s temperature is forecast to range between around 20°C and 29°C, although actual conditions may vary across different areas.

Residents should remain prepared for changing weather, particularly during outdoor travel and evening commutes. Thunderstorms and sudden showers may affect traffic movement and visibility.

Northeast Monsoon Brings Fresh Rainfall Activity

The IMD announced the onset of the northeast monsoon over southern India on October 15. The seasonal system typically remains active from October to December and plays an important role in bringing rainfall to parts of peninsular India.

The weather department has indicated that a wet spell, including isolated heavy rainfall, is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka until October 21.

The northeast monsoon contributes around 10–11% of India’s annual rainfall. It is particularly significant for Tamil Nadu and neighbouring southern regions, where seasonal showers support agriculture and replenish water resources.

Karnataka Districts May See Rain and Gusty Winds

Rainfall activity is expected to extend beyond Bengaluru, with several districts in southern Karnataka likely to experience showers and thunderstorms.

Forecasts issued by the Meteorological Centre in Bengaluru have also indicated the possibility of heavy rain at isolated places in Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural and other southern districts during the period.

Some areas may experience gusty winds accompanying thunderstorms. The intensity and distribution of rainfall could differ across districts, depending on local weather conditions.

Residents Advised to Exercise Caution

With thunderstorms and lightning possible, residents are advised to monitor official weather updates and take precautions during periods of heavy rain.

Motorists should drive carefully on wet roads, while people outdoors should seek shelter in safe buildings when lightning occurs. Residents should also remain alert to temporary waterlogging and localised traffic disruptions during intense showers.

The change in monsoon conditions signals a renewed period of rainfall across southern India. Bengaluru’s weather over the coming days will depend on the development and movement of the prevailing weather systems.
