A disturbing child death case in Bengaluru has taken a dramatic turn, with police registering a murder case against a woman and her alleged partner nearly three months after the death of her six-year-old daughter.

The incident occurred in Seegehalli under the Kadugodi police limits. The victim, Vennila, died on March 24 in circumstances that were initially believed to be accidental.

Fresh allegations trigger probe

According to police, Priyanka and her husband Praveen, natives of Davanagere, have two daughters. Investigators said tensions had reportedly developed within the family after Priyanka allegedly entered into an extramarital relationship with her former college friend, Mohan.

Following the child’s death, Priyanka allegedly gave different explanations to family members regarding what had happened. In one version, she reportedly claimed that the girl fell ill after consuming biryani. In another, she allegedly stated that the child had eaten ice cream and was later found dead after being left asleep inside a car with the air-conditioning switched on.

The contradictory accounts raised doubts among relatives and prompted further scrutiny.

Father seeks independent review

Police said Praveen later obtained the post-mortem report and sought an independent opinion from a doctor relative living abroad. Based on the findings and his concerns, he approached the police alleging that his daughter may have been assaulted and suffocated.

Following the complaint, investigators registered a murder case and began a detailed inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

Investigation underway

Mohan has been arrested and is currently being questioned in connection with the case. Priyanka, meanwhile, is reported to be absconding, and police teams are working to trace her whereabouts.

Officials said the exact cause of death will be determined after the forensic science laboratory report is received. Investigators are examining all possible angles as they seek to establish the sequence of events that led to the child’s death.
