Bengaluru woman sexually assaulted and robbed; police clarify no gang rape
A 37-year-old woman was reportedly assaulted and robbed by two men near KR Market in central Bengaluru on Sunday night, according to police. However, senior officials dismissed media claims of gang rape.
“Based on allegations of sexual assault and extortion, a case was registered,” stated Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda.
The suspects, Saravan (35) and Ganesh (23), allegedly engaged in consensual sexual acts with the woman after promising payment. A dispute over the money led to them seizing her phone and stealing ₹650 in cash before fleeing. Both men, described as homeless and working odd jobs, were arrested and sent to judicial custody following their court appearance.
Investigations revealed the woman, originally from Tamil Nadu, had recently come to Bengaluru after a family disagreement. She had been staying at local mutts and rehabilitation centers and was waiting to travel back to her brother’s home when the incident occurred.
Authorities continue to probe the case to determine all aspects of the events.
