In a bold stride toward a healthier and greener Bengaluru, the Institution of Agricultural Technologists (IAT) hosted a one-day workshop promoting sustainable urban practices and an increase in green cover in rapidly growing urban and peri-urban zones. Held in the presence of Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad, the event was praised as both timely and vital for restoring Bengaluru’s identity as the “Garden City.”

A major highlight was the call for an urban agriculture policy, alongside proposals for monthly public engagement events to deepen awareness. Ashok Dalawai, Chairman of the Karnataka State Agricultural Price Commission, emphasized the urgency of integrating agriculture into urban spaces, noting the demographic shift from rural to urban India.

Renowned ecologist Chandrashekar Biradar shared that a mere 4% increase in green cover could lower city temperatures by 1°C, advocating for a minimum 33% greenery threshold to combat urban heat. His research also links green environments with greater emotional well-being.

Yogesh G H, IAT Secretary, underscored the value of rooftop gardening as a tool for urban transformation—cleaning the air, reducing temperatures, and enabling residents to grow their own organic produce. Over 175 participants attended, engaging in live gardening demos and strategic discussions on how to shape a more sustainable Bengaluru.
