The people of Bengaluru are in for a heavenly treat. On Wednesday, they are going to see something very unusual called ‘Zero Shadow Day’. The event will take place when the sun is precisely at the zenith, which will make all of the shadows vanish, between 12:17 and 12:23 pm. In addition to Bengaluru, individuals may also experience the phenomenon in Kanyakumari, Bhopal, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.

On Zero Shadow Day, at noon, nothing casts a shadow when the sun is directly overhead. This phenomenon typically occurs near the equator, where the sun’s angle with respect to Earth’s surface is almost exactly perpendicular. As a result, items appear to have no shadow at all.
As the Earth rotates around the sun, its position in the sky changes, with its zenith occurring at different latitudes throughout the year. This not only brings about the changing of the seasons but also the annual movement of the sun from 23.5 degrees south of the equator to 23.5 degrees north.
In latitudes between +23.5 and -23.5 degrees, there are twice-yearly Zero Shadow Days, according to the Astronomical Society of India.
The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in Bengaluru will host events on April 24 to mark Zero Shadow Day at its Koramangala campus. They have welcomed the public to join in on the activities starting from 10 AM to 1 PM. Participants can observe and measure changing shadow lengths of objects and gain insights into the Earth’s tilt and orbit around the sun.
