The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is set to build 17 new sewage treatment plants (STPs) with a combined capacity of 583 MLD. This ambitious initiative aims to tackle Bengaluru’s escalating wastewater challenges and improve water reuse by supplying treated water to industrial zones.
Currently, BWSSB oversees a sprawling 12,000 km pipeline network, delivering 2,250 MLD of water daily to the city from the Cauvery River, 100 km away. Of this, around 85-90% returns as wastewater. The recent commissioning of the Cauvery V Stage project increased water supply from 1,450 MLD to 2,250 MLD, pushing wastewater generation past 2,000 MLD.
Although the city’s 33 existing STPs treat approximately 1,200 MLD of wastewater, a significant gap of 800 MLD remains untreated. To address this, BWSSB plans to invest ₹2,200–₹2,400 crore in constructing the new STPs, according to BWSSB chairman Ram Prasath Manohar.
This expansion underscores Bengaluru’s commitment to sustainable urban development and efficient resource management.
