Bengaluru is set to inaugurate the fifth phase of its Cauvery water project, which will supply drinking water to 110 villages under the Greater Bangalore Municipal Corporation. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar will launch the project on October 16, marking a significant milestone in the city’s efforts to address its water needs.

This ambitious project, undertaken at a cost of ₹4,336 crore in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aims to provide an additional 775 million litres per day (MLD) of water to Bengaluru. It is designed to benefit approximately 50 lakh residents, ensuring that Cauvery water reaches even the most remote areas of the newly added villages and throughout the city.

As Bengaluru’s population continues to grow rapidly, this initiative is crucial for securing the city’s water future and addressing the increasing demand for reliable water supply.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for October 16 at 10:30 am at the Bangalore Jalmandali premises in Torekadanahalli, Malavalli taluk, Mandya district. The event will be presided over by Malavalli Constituency MLA PM Narendraswamy, and will see the participation of Union and State Ministers, MPs, and MLAs. Notably, representatives from JICA, including Chief Representative Takeuchi Takuro and Consul General of Japan Tsutomu, will also be in attendance.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar expressed optimism regarding the project’s impact, asserting that it will significantly alleviate water-related issues in Bengaluru. “The Cauvery 5th phase project will provide adequate supply to various villages, and our objective is to make Bangalore water surplus through sustainable projects,” he stated. He also acknowledged the difficulties citizens faced last summer due to drying tube wells, commending the Jalmandal staff for their proactive measures in addressing these challenges.

The project’s advantages will extend to several assembly constituencies, including Yeshavantpur, Dasarahalli, Batarayanpur, Bangalore Dakshina, Mahadevpur, Rajarajeshwarinagar, KR Puram, and Bommanahalli. By enhancing the water supply in these areas, the fifth phase of the Cauvery project plays a critical role in ensuring that Bengaluru can sustainably support its growing population.

As the city prepares for the project’s inauguration, it represents a significant step towards a more water-secure future for Bengaluru.
