Bengaluru :The food and beverage (F&B) sector in Bengaluru has strongly opposed the ban on alcohol sales slated for February 14, Valentine’s Day, citing potential losses of 10-15% of their monthly revenue.

The City Police Commissioner issued an order on February 6, prohibiting the sale of alcohol from 5 pm on February 14 until midnight on February 16, coinciding with the Legislative Council by-election to the Bangalore Teachers’ Constituency scheduled for February 16.

Chethan Hegde, Chapter Head of the National Restaurants Association of India (NRAI) in Bengaluru and founder of the popular pub, 1522, expressed concern, stating that the Valentine’s Day closure would significantly impact their business and dampen the festive spirit. Hegde emphasized the extensive preparations made in anticipation of the busy night, with patrons often booking tables well in advance. He lamented the loss of revenue and resources invested in curating special Valentine’s Day experiences. Additionally, Hegde highlighted the challenge posed by Karnataka’s high alcohol taxes, which have already affected business profitability.

Amit Roy, joint secretary of NRAI Bengaluru chapter and owner of the renowned bar chain, Watson’s, criticized the ban as “unreasonable,” emphasizing that such sudden decisions adversely affect not only businesses but also customers and government revenues. Roy pointed out the elaborate arrangements made for Valentine’s Day, including special menus and events, which will now go to waste.

Naren Beliappa of Leisure Entertainment echoed similar sentiments, noting that this would mark the first-ever ban on alcohol sales on Valentine’s Day in Bengaluru. Beliappa emphasized the city’s youthful demographic and the significant role of the F&B industry in its celebrations. He urged the government to recognize the industry’s contributions and address the losses incurred.
