Bengaluru’s ‘Fresh from Farmers’ Initiative Bridges Gap Between Residents and Farmers
The ‘Fresh from Farmers‘ initiative has grown into a thriving network in Bengaluru, connecting local farmers directly with apartment complexes and residential communities to provide fresh, chemical-free produce. The initiative, launched in 2016 at Oceanus Greendale, has now expanded to over 250 communities, offering farm-fresh fruits, vegetables, and even specialty items like dragon fruit and jackfruit, without middlemen.
Farmers from surrounding areas, including Kolar, Anantapur, and Andhra Pradesh, benefit by getting fair prices for their produce. Pre-orders are taken online, and farmers deliver the fresh harvest directly to residents, ensuring transparency and accountability. The initiative is especially beneficial during seasonal fruit offerings, like mangoes and pomegranates. Residents not only enjoy fresh, healthy snacks, but they also have the opportunity to visit farms and engage in educational activities like mango-picking.
The initiative also supports the sustainability of farming by allowing farmers to manage production based on demand, ensuring that they avoid the financial strain of unsold crops. Through this collaborative effort, the project has made significant contributions to both the local economy and the well-being of the farming community, creating a model that could inspire similar programs in other regions.
