An ongoing survey by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has revealed that over 1,171 buildings currently under construction are illegal. The survey began after the collapse of a six-storey building in Babusapalya last October, which tragically claimed nine lives. However, BBMP’s actions have drawn ire as only portions of nine buildings have been demolished so far.
Mahadevapura leads in identifying illegal constructions, thanks to active citizen involvement. In contrast, zones like RR Nagar and West have lagged in their surveys, even though violations persist citywide. BBMP’s zonal commissioners, tasked with conducting these surveys, have yet to gather complete data from all eight zones.
Residents have expressed frustration, calling BBMP’s efforts a mere facade. “They’re masking violations with token actions like sealing buildings,” said R. Rajagopalan of the Bengaluru Coalition. He emphasized the need for strict enforcement, urging demolitions as mandated by law.
Shashi Kumar, a senior citizen from Jayanagar, reported 31 violations in his ward but noted BBMP’s delayed response. “Despite complaints last November, illegal constructions, including those on rajakaluves, continue unabated,” he said, accusing BBMP of stalling to let builders finish projects.
Critics argue that the lack of decisive action undermines legal frameworks and residents’ trust. Meanwhile, BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath has remained unavailable for comment.
