Bengaluru’s Metro vs. Auto Fare Debate Goes Viral
A Bengaluru resident’s comparison of metro and auto fares has taken social media by storm, sparking a fresh debate on the affordability and practicality of public transport in the city.
The post, shared on X, highlighted the fare disparity for a trip between Malleshwara and Yelachenahalli. For three people, the metro costs ₹180, while the auto fare for the same route is ₹210. This side-by-side comparison triggered heated discussions among netizens about the pros and cons of each transport option.
Many users pointed out that the actual metro fare could exceed ₹210 when accounting for last-mile connectivity costs, especially if riders need to take additional transport after reaching the metro station. Others suggested that the Karnataka government should collaborate with auto unions to introduce electric autos with reduced fares to provide more affordable options for passengers.
Some users defended the metro for its speed, safety, and comfort, while others argued that the fare structure should be adjusted for better affordability. One user noted, “Metro has AC, is safer, and ensures timely arrival. But three people in an auto for long distances isn’t comfortable.”
The discussion comes amid declining metro ridership. Following a nearly 100% fare hike and the introduction of an additional 5% charge during peak hours, ridership dropped significantly to 6.3 lakh daily passengers, a 2.3 lakh decrease, according to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).
