Bengaluru's Road Woes Set For Repair With Rs 694 Crore Plan

Bengaluru’s notorious roads, often the subject of commuter complaints and viral social media memes, are finally slated for repairs. The Urban Development Department (UDD) has approved a comprehensive plan to resurface 389.68 km of roads at an estimated cost of Rs 694 crore. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will oversee the project, which will be executed over the next two financial years.

The focus of the repair plan is on the city’s outer areas, which have suffered from worse road conditions compared to central Bengaluru. A significant portion of the budget—Rs 429.5 crore—has been allocated for nine assembly constituencies in these outer areas, including Yelahanka, Bommanahalli, and RR Nagar. Mahadevapura, a technology hub struggling with infrastructure issues, has been allocated Rs 140 crore, while Dasarahalli will receive the smallest allocation of Rs 20 crore.

The city’s central areas, which are in better condition, will receive Rs 264.5 crore for road repairs. This funding will cover around 18 assembly constituencies under BBMP’s East, West, and South zones. In response to pressure from local MLAs, the BBMP expanded its original plan from 197 to 218 roads that require immediate attention. Following the UDD’s approval of tenders, the BBMP expects to begin roadworks by January.

To ensure effective repairs, the BBMP has set up an eleven-member committee, including experts from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) India, to create a standard operating procedure (SOP) for road and footpath repairs by mid-December.
