Karnataka Infrastructure Minister M B Patil has assured that the site selection for Bengaluru’s second airport will be based purely on feasibility, benefiting the city, its people, industries, and economy.

After the Assembly session, Patil and senior officials will meet the Union Civil Aviation Minister to request an Airport Authority of India (AAI) team for site approval. Two locations are under consideration: Harohalli on Kanakapura Road and Nelamangala on Kunigal Road. While Kunigal Road is 38 km from the city, Kanakapura Road boasts better connectivity via the metro, NICE Road, and the Mysuru Expressway.

Emphasizing the importance of accessibility, Patil stated that the new airport must be within 50 km of the city to attract investors under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. He dismissed any external pressure in decision-making, asserting that viability and connectivity will be the key factors.

The government is proactively planning for Bengaluru’s growing air traffic, with the current Devanahalli airport expected to reach its 100-million passenger capacity by 2030. Since its exclusivity clause expires in 2033, early preparations are underway to ensure the second airport is operational within the next 7-8 years.
