Bengaluru’s eagerly awaited Yellow Line of the Namma Metro has taken a major leap forward, securing essential safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), Southern Circle. This critical approval moves the city closer to launching passenger services on the 19.15-kilometre stretch connecting RV Road in the south to Bommasandra.
According to Yashwanth Chavan, BMRCL’s chief public relations officer, this certification is a key requirement before commercial operations can begin. While the CMRS has greenlit the project, it has also laid out specific technical and operational conditions that must be addressed before final approval for passenger service.
Another senior BMRCL official explained that these stipulations — typically concerning signaling systems, emergency readiness, fire safety, station amenities, and power infrastructure — must be fully complied with. A compliance report will then be submitted to obtain the final go-ahead.
The inspection, led by AM Chowdhary, spanned three days starting July 22, and covered every aspect of the metro line’s preparedness.
Although the official launch date is yet to be finalized, BMRCL is targeting an August 15 debut, pending final approvals and completion of remaining work. Both state and central governments have been informed of the safety clearance. Discussions are underway about the potential presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the inauguration, though his attendance remains unconfirmed.
Initial services will include three driverless trains operating every 20 minutes, with plans to increase frequency to five-minute intervals by March 2026.
