Bengaluru, October 13: The Bangalore International Centre (BIC) has opened a new children’s library, aiming to counter the decline in reading habits among youngsters in the digital age. The library, named Around the World in 50 Days, is open every Sunday and is free for all visitors.
Borrowing books and registration
Although the library formally opened a month ago, book borrowing started on Sunday, October 12. To borrow books, children must register after at least three visits. The library caters primarily to children aged 6 to 14, though parents are encouraged to participate in sessions alongside their children.
Interactive storytelling sessions
The library utilises its spacious performance area for interactive sessions designed to engage children in reading while developing empathy and social skills. On October 5, storytelling facilitator Aruna Gopakumar, founder of The School of You, guided a session attended by 24 children and their parents. She highlighted the importance of experiencing stories from multiple perspectives.
“Emotional and social skills are built through these interactions. Learning is not a one-way street,” Gopakumar said.
Participation from parents, she added, helps children – often strangers to each other – feel comfortable and engage fully in the activities.
Library collection and support
According to Advaita Manikkath, Programmes Associate at BIC, the library’s inventory currently includes around 900 books, with a focus on picture books. The collection is curated by Champaca, with funding support from Doorbeen and the H T Parekh Foundation.
“We want parents involved as well; this should be a space that encourages reading and dialogue at the family level,” Manikkath remarked.
Young regulars and popular reads
Among the little regulars are six-year-old Savreen and five-year-old Jeeva, who attend sessions weekly and often stay until the library closes at 6 pm. Savreen enjoys The Twits by Roald Dahl, while Jeeva prefers picture books featuring animals.
BIC’s children’s library offers a promising avenue for families to reconnect with reading, storytelling, and interactive learning in a safe and welcoming environment.
