Karnataka has been placed on alert after the H5N1 avian influenza virus, commonly known as bird flu, was detected in chickens at a poultry facility in Hesaraghatta.
Following central government directions, inspections were launched at poultry farms around Bengaluru. Officials reportedly found the virus during the first round of checks.
Poultry culled, farm closed
Authorities have culled and buried chickens at the affected farm as a precautionary measure to contain the spread.
The poultry unit at Hesaraghatta, which comes under the state government, has been temporarily closed. Poultry workers and handlers at the site have reportedly been placed under quarantine and observation.
The farm is said to have supplied chickens to multiple parts of Karnataka, increasing concern over possible spread.
Inspections expanded to nearby areas
Government veterinary officers have issued notices to surrounding gram panchayats, directing them to inspect poultry sheds, rearing units, and chicken retail outlets.
Officials have also instructed field veterinary staff to intensify surveillance in neighbouring areas and report any unusual bird deaths immediately.
Public urged not to panic
Experts note that properly cooked chicken and eggs are generally considered safe to eat, but consumers are advised to buy poultry products only from authorised and hygienic sources.
Citizens have been urged to report sudden deaths among birds or unusual illness in poultry to local authorities.
Monitoring continues
The detection of H5N1 during summer has prompted swift action from the state government, with monitoring expected to continue in the coming days
