Bengaluru: The Karnataka BJP has strongly criticized Chief Minister Siddaramaiah‘s announcement to revoke the hijab ban imposed by the previous BJP government. In a social media post on Friday, the BJP accused Siddaramaiah of intending to amend the Constitution to appease the ‘goondas’ (thugs) associated with the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) and minority communities, warning that the people would teach him a lesson in the days to come.

The BJP asserted that Siddaramaiah’s decision was akin to sowing poisonous seeds in the harmonious garden of all religions. According to the BJP, the uniform guidelines were implemented to ensure equality among students in schools and colleges, a measure upheld by the Supreme Court of India. The party argued that the Chief Minister’s stance on uniforms was creating divisiveness among school-going children.

In a potentially contentious move, Siddaramaiah announced on Saturday that he had requested the lifting of the hijab ban for students and pre-university students, emphasizing that clothing is a matter of individual choice. He criticized PM Modi’s ‘sab ka saath sab ka vikas’ (Together with all, development for all) slogan as bogus and accused the BJP of dividing people based on clothing, dress, and caste. Siddaramaiah emphasized the right of individuals to choose their clothing and food habits, stating that our government will work for the poor.

The previous BJP government had implemented the hijab ban in schools and pre-university colleges, a decision that was challenged by students in the Karnataka High Court. The court upheld the ban, and the matter is currently pending in the Supreme Court. Siddaramaiah’s recent announcement to lift the ban has reignited the debate on the matter, with contrasting views on individual choice and uniformity in educational institutions.
