BJP cancels community meal programme

Bengaluru: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State unit has decided to scrap the community meal programme that was planned as a culmination of its Mushti Dhanya Abhiyan, the farmer outreach campaign launched by State president B.S. Yeddyurappa.

The BJP workers have collected handful of grains from farmer households from across the State as part of the campaign for cooking a community meal in villages. The party has now scrapped the community meal programme as it runs contrary to the model code of conduct that is in force.

The code of conduct bars any form of public feeding and even bars meals indoors for more than 20 people.

BJP state general secretary N. Ravikumar said the community meal programme was scrapped since the Election Commission had not permitted it citing the code of conduct. “We may decentralise the entire programme, cook meals using the foodgrains in our worker’s houses and distribute a sweet to farmer households as prasada , asking them to take a pledge not to commit suicide,” he said.
